マジックにおいて密かにカードを覗き見る際、グリンプス（glimpse）やピーク（peek）という用語を使うことがあります。私が最初に知った英単語はグリンプスなのですが、ピークとどういう違いがあるのだろうと疑問に思ったため、英語の意味を調べてみました。
glimpse と peek の違い
Oxford Learner's Dictionaries1 を参照しました。
glimpseの定義
"glimpse somebody/something to see somebody/something for a moment, but not very clearly"2
「誰か/何かをちらりと見る、誰か/何かが一瞬見えるが、あまりはっきりとは見えない」
見る「時間の長さ」に焦点を当てているようです。
peekの定義
" to look at something quickly and secretly because you should not be looking at it"3
「それを見るべきではないので、何かを素早くこっそり見ること」
見る行為が「秘密裏に行わている」ことが重要なようです。
glimpseとpeekの違い
まとめると、glimpseはわずかな時間であることに焦点が当たっており、peekは見てはいけない状況かどうかに焦点が当たっている、と言えそうです。
もっともマジシャンの行うグリンプスやピークといった行為は、あまり時間をかけて行うものでもないですし、大抵は見ているはずのないものを見ているので、どちらかの意味合いを強調する文脈ではない限り、どちらを使っても問題は無さそうだ、ということが分かりました。ですが、違いが少し分かったので、使い分けられるのであれば、意識的に使い分けてみようと思います。
